The Story of Baglio Strafalcello

Baglio Strafalcello was born in the heart of authentic Sicily, among the rolling hills of western Sicily, as the centre of a land deeply connected to tradition, agriculture and rural life.

Even today, its architecture and spaces tell a story that has crossed generations, preserving the timeless charm of traditional Sicilian bagli.

Origins in the Nineteenth Century

Baglio Strafalcello was built during the nineteenth century, at a time when grain cultivation and livestock farming represented the main activities of the surrounding territory.

The estate was part of the historic Stato di Tursi, a vast group of feudal lands extending across more than 2,800 hectares and once belonging to the Barony of Baida. Within this landscape, Baglio Strafalcello played a central role in managing agricultural life and the surrounding lands.

A Strategic Position

Like many traditional Sicilian bagli, Strafalcello was built in a dominant position, allowing visual control over both the surrounding countryside and the main routes crossing the territory.

This architectural choice responded to both practical and defensive needs, transforming the baglio into a safe and self-sufficient place.

Architecture and Original Details

To this day, the structure preserves many of its original architectural elements: stone walls, tuff details and hand-carved stone used for corners, lintels and door frames.

The courtyards, partially paved with traditional “abbalatatu” stone slabs, still reflect the craftsmanship and attention to detail typical of Sicilian rural architecture.

Water, Daily Life and Tradition

Water supply was ensured by a natural spring located uphill from the baglio, connected to a canal system serving both the interior spaces and the outdoor areas.

One of the most symbolic elements of this system is the historic fountain and watering trough commissioned by Luigi Messina and restored in 1966, still standing today as a testament to everyday life in the past..

From Tradition to Contemporary Preservation

Over the years, Baglio Strafalcello has undergone careful restoration and maintenance work carried out with deep respect for its original identity.

Thanks to the commitment of Felice Buccellato, the structure has preserved its authenticity, maintaining essential elements such as the original floors and ceilings.

A Place Surrounded by the Sicilian Landscape

Located within a wine estate, the baglio is surrounded by vineyards and landscapes that reflect the authentic soul of western Sicily.

From the panoramic terrace, the view stretches across an extraordinary territory, from the medieval town of Erice to the Gulf of Castellammare, offering scenery of rare beauty.
